D isab ility Awareness Month is an extended version o f the D is a b ility Aw areness Weeks that have been held on campus since 1997. Marissa Runkle o f the Logan Center has coo rd i­ nated most o f the efforts along w ith Kathleen Roblez, co-pres­ ident o f Rest Ruddies and the College Buddy Director. The lirs l scheduled event is a performance by Sujeet Desai, a 23-year-old man who was born w ith Down Syndrome. He w ill p lay the p iano , c la r in e t and v io lin in a co nce rt held a t 7 p .m . to n ig h t in W a sh ing ton Hall. A graduate o f the Berkshire Music Academy, Desai has also e a rn e d a b la c k b e lt in Tae Kwon Do and won gold and s il­ ve r m edals sw im m ing in the S p ec ia l O ly m p ic s W o rld Games. “ He has rea lly pushed h im ­ self to work so hard. His older b ro th e r, w ho does n o t have special needs, has served as a re a l in s p ira t io n to h im ,” R unkle sa id . “ T o m o rro w |a t the concert! there w ill be a lot o f c h ild re n w ho have Down S yndrom e, and he is one o f the ir idols.” The concert by Desai is to u t­ ed by the organizers as one o f the h ig h lig h ts o f D isa b ilitie s Awareness Month.
